Don Schrencengost waded through the ash-covered debris of an East Liberty home on Friday to inspect the building’s structural stability.

A fire that began in the home’s kitchen the previous night ripped through the roof, sending a family fleeing for their lives.

Schrencengost, a senior inspector for the city’s Bureau of Building Inspection, determined the building will need significant repairs, but is salvageable.

“Thank God no one was hurt,” said Schrencengost, who handles about a dozen complaints a day throughout Lawrenceville, Highland Park and East Liberty. “This could have been much, much worse.”

Nearly eight months after the city’s inspection bureau faced criticism from a state board and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, the bureau itself is being rebuilt.

The bureau is in charge of issuing building permits; inspecting buildings for possible violations of the city building code; ensuring property owners are maintaining their properties; and condemning unsafe and structurally unsound buildings. The bureau’s $3.44 million budget for this year is a slight drop from its $3.62 million budget in 2009.

The department has begun to correct the problems identified in a study commissioned in 2008 by the Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority. So far, the bureau has hired new inspectors, such as Schrencengost, who started with the bureau in April under a new training program.

The bureau has implemented new procedures to make sure police officers are reporting code violations; placed two inspectors in the Zone 5 police station in Highland Park; purchased 24 Ford Focus patrol cars; and equipped inspectors with 12 wireless, hand-held computers to report code violations instantly.

“We’re in the process of doing a lot of things,” said John Jennings, the bureau’s acting chief. “There is still a lot to be done.”

SCHENECTADY — Embattled Schenectady schools Superintendent Eric Ely is a finalist for a job in Erie, Pa., according to a person familiar with the district’s hunt for a new leader.

Ely is one of three finalists for the superintendent’s position and will soon travel to northwestern Pennsylvania to participate in a public forum in the next two weeks, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the Erie search, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Erie district is holding community forums to introduce the candidates. Ely, 50, did not immediately reply to requests for comment. Ely’s Oakland Avenue home is for sale, though he has only said that is because he wants to find a residence that is “more manageable.” He was a finalist for a superintendent’s job in Ohio in 2007. The superintendent and district administrators have been under intense scrutiny since the February arrest of now retired facilities supervisor Steven Raucci, who is awaiting trial on charges of placing explosive devices at the homes and on the cars of people who angered him. Ely has denied knowledge of many of Raucci’s alleged actions.Raucci, who was also a CSEA unit president, has been accused of harassing co-workers and making employees campaign for school board candidates.

Consumer Reports Suspends Recommendations for Recalled Toyotas

YONKERS, N.Y., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Consumer Reports has temporarily suspended its “recommended” status for eight Toyota vehicle models and one Pontiac model that may have accelerator pedals that can stick and cause unintended acceleration.
Consumer Reports are also advising used-car buyers to avoid purchasing any of the affected vehicles until this issue is resolved.
“Although incidents of sudden acceleration are rare, we are taking this action because the vehicles have been identified as potentially unsafe without a fix yet being available to consumers, and in general our position is that you shouldn’t compromise on safety,” said Jim Guest, President of Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports.
Toyota said Friday it is working to get new parts to its factories and is finalizing a fix for dealers.
Consumer Reports recommends that owners of the estimated 2.3 million vehicles involved in the recall become familiar with the warning signs of trouble, which may include the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slower to return to its upper position, or simply not operating smoothly. It adds that all drivers should know what to do if their car suffers sudden unintended acceleration, and has posted specific steps for safely regaining control of a runaway vehicle at www.ConsumerReports.org/acceleration.
